For most of us school was a time to remember, to enjoy. Every day was a new experience, new friends and boundless opportunity. Sure the little things seemed big; the nerves on the first day of the school year, did we pass that test; but our cares were few and far between.
Unfortunately for some children things were a little different. Remember those kids who just never fitted in, that came to school in hand me downs, who never had lunch, who always seemed to be sick, they were picked on and rarely did well in class. What became of those kids, how did their lives turn out?
As a company who prides itself on enhancing the learning experience of children, Harlequin has wondered how we can help all kids get the most out of school and importantly provide them with the tools and knowledge they need to understand and participate in today’s world.
That’s why Harlequin continues to build upon their long standing partnership with Barnardos, one of the nation’s most respected child welfare agencies. Barnardos mentoring and tutoring programs, learning centres and educational grants are all part of a strategy that recognises education is the key to unlocking children’s potential.

Our friends at Barnardos tell us this
Every day Barnardos sees many children struggling to cope with a life that is consumed by the fear of abuse, neglect, homelessness, poverty and ultimately failure. The most basic thing we can do is offer them food, shelter and even a safe and loving family. But probably the most important and lasting thing we can offer them is the chance of a good education. The knowledge and skills they acquire now are the real building blocks of independence and success. This partnership with Harlequin can offer disadvantaged kids the chance to realise their dreams.
Thank you to everyone who continues support Harlequin. Please look at Barnardos website and see what amazing work they do with children and families. www.barnardos.org.au If you think you could help them, even just a little a bit please contact them on sp@barnardos.org.au

Diabetes Australia is the national peak body for diabetes in Australia providing a single, powerful, collective voice for people living with diabetes, their families and carers.
As a charitable organisation, it works in partnership with diabetes health professionals and educators, researchers and healthcare providers to minimise the impact of diabetes on the Australian community. It is also a significant ?nancial contributor towards research into better treatments for diabetes and the search for a cure.
Diabetes Australia provides practical assistance and information to approximately 900,000 Australians diagnosed with diabetes. The World Health Organisation has declared diabetes a pandemic disease threatening to overwhelm global healthcare services, wipe out some indigenous populations and undermine economies worldwide, especially in developing countries. Diabetes is a global problem with devastating human, social and economic impact. Today more than 250 million people worldwide are living with diabetes and by 2025, this total is expected to increase to over 380 million people. Each year another 7 million people develop diabetes.
The good news… we have the knowledge to tackle the diabetes epidemic in Australia, and to reduce the suffering and pre-mature deaths that diabetes causes. We have the cost- effective strategies to prevent or delay the onset of diabetes related complications.
With the increase in Australian children being diagnosed with diabetes, we at Harlequin have the joint belief that by promoting low-cost strategies that alter diet, increase physical activity and modify our lifestyles, the advance of this epidemic can be reversed.
By championing Diabetes Australia, Harlequin’s aim is to help create vital awareness in our school tuck shops and canteens by teaching and informing our children that we can stop this epidemic by simply enjoying fun physical activity and choosing to eat tasty healthy foods.
Its simple. Lets start today. Lets turn diabetes around.
