Planet Ark Schools Recycle Right Challenge
Is your school up to the challenge?? It’s time to get your recycling on.
Recycling is such a great activity to get your kids involved in. My five year old loves being in charge of taking it out to the bin. It’s been his job for most of the year and it’s been a great way to teach him responsibility and get him involved in household tasks. It helps him understand what happens to all that paper and plastic wrapped around the toys we buy him (seriously, they weren’t wrong about pester power. I leave him at home now!) after it leaves our home.
So what’s the Schools Recycle Right Challenge all about?
An initiative of National Recycling Week, the Schools Recycle Right Challenge is currently running. It started on October 21 and runs until November 21 2013.
The Schools Recycle Right Challenge will run for a four-week period from Mon 21 October – Fri 15 November. Schools can nominate to participate in as many recycling-themed activities and lessons as they like, and the dates these activities are held is flexible during the period of the Challenge. This initiative has been designed for flexibility in the classroom and within the school term, while maintaining strong, consistent messaging about the importance of recycling and the conservation of resources.
According to the Planet Ark Website, ‘we provided free recycling activity guides, lesson plans and Australian school event ideas, designed to engage students and teachers to learn by doing and having fun! Some examples were:
• Recycling or re-use events, like swap parties, file flings, or recycling games
• Art and craft activities, from collages and instruments to plastic bag knitting
• Guest speakers, from councils or recycling organisations
• Starting a new recycling system, compost or worm farm, or a demonstration
Schools around the country are invited to join the Schools Recycle Right Challenge through a simple online registration form. By registering to participate in the Challenge, schools gain access to a wide range of ready-to-use materials and resources, a recycling competition just for schools, as well as early registration incentives.
Planet Ark wants your school to be involved!
